The Commercial #Microbiome Market

Now that #SFAF2019 is over and I have a few days to relax in sunny Santa Fe NM, I took some time to do a little reading and writing on some topics I’ve had on my mind lately. Recently at #SFAF2019, I had a chat with a colleague about the size and scope of the microbiome market. I was surprised they didn’t realize how rapidly this space was growing, and how many companies are operating in this space with specific solutions and products for both B2B and B2C markets.

I’ve done a ton of analysis on this topic (far more than just the simple list that is below) – but suffice to say that (depending on your math) there’s well over a billion of dollars of investment funding (VC and otherwise) pouring into this space. The list below includes many startups, as well as larger ones that are either already offering services or products specifically for the microbiome market or making investments in developing new ones.

By no means is this a complete list – I know I probably missed some. Leave a comment and let me know if I’ve missed something. ANd yes – I probably should break these companies into separate categories too, but that would be for a post on another day. The list below includes commerical organizations that produce or are developing therapeutics, diagnostics, B2B and B2C products or services specialized in the microbiome space.

It’s hard to keep up with all of them…

  1. One new entrant is Probionase Therapies, which produces Probiorinse, the first probiotic designed for application directly inside the nose. This innovative solution is unique and has been on sale to consumers in the US for one year and has launched about four weeks ago in Canada.

    1. Thanks! I’ll add it to my list. I expect that there are far more B2C companies in this space that I’m not aware of – they seem to be cropping up all the time. 😉

  2. Great list Jonathan. Resphera Biosciences also remains active in the microbiome space providing bioinformatics and biostatistical support to research hospitals and groups in industry.

  3. Dear Jonathan, thank you for putting together this extensive list. Here is another company to keep in mind:
PharmaBiome (www.pharmabiome.com) pioneers next-generation microbiome therapies. Our bacterial mixes target functional disbalances of the microbiome and our portfolio of previously uncultured intestinal bacteria and our proprietary technology allow greater control over production, storage and therapeutic efficacy.

  4. Thanks Jonathan! This is very helpful! Here are some additional companies that I think qualify for the list –
    Armata Pharmaceuticals
    BaseClear BiaNomics
    BiomX
    Biospherex
Clinical Microbiomics A/S (I think the name Clinical Metagenomics A/S in the list may be incorrect)
    CoreBiome
    DNAgenotek
    Eagle Genomics
    Eurofins
    Locus Biosciences
    Loop Genomics
    Metabiomics
    Microba
    MOgene
    Osel
    Phase Genomics
    Pylum Biosciences
    Rancho Biosciences
    S-Biomedic
    Sun Genomics
    Zymo Research

    VC/Investor – ?
    Seventure Partners
    Johnson & Johnson

Do you intend to include companies from the following industries: pre/probiotic industry (may double or triple the list), cosmetics and skincare, pet microbiomics?

    1. Yes. I need to refine this list a bit (i’ve removed “suppliers/vendors”) and will update shortly. But consumer focused “microbiome” companies I would consider also on the list.

  5. I’ve updated the post with suggestions I received from Twitter and here in the comments – now up to 116 companies! wow…

  6. Based on feedback from Daniel McDonald at UCSD – I’ve removed The American Gut Project from the list (and edited the post above). (thanks Daniel!)
